INTERVIEW ON THE OCCASION OF THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF VIETNAM NATIONAL DAY AND 75 YEARS OF BILATERAL RELATION BETWEEN VIETNAM AND ROMANIA given by H.E. Mr. Do Duc Thanh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to Romania

1. What is the significance, impact of celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Romania on the bilateral relations?

The 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Romania is a truly meaningful milestone. It is not only a moment to look back on the long-standing friendship, solidarity, and mutual support between our two peoples, but also an opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to cooperation in the future. Over the past decades, Romania has stood by Viet Nam during challenging times, including the years of national struggle for independence, the process of economic development, and even during the Covid-19 pandemic...

This anniversary reminds us of the deep trust and valuable legacy that our predecessors have built, while inspiring us to further strengthen people-to-people exchanges, cultural understanding, and economic partnership in the new era. At the same time, the commemoration allows our peoples to better appreciate the profound meaning of this traditional solidarity and friendship for each nation, thereby deepening mutual trust and understanding in today’s context of development.

While the international environment has changed and each country’s development priorities have evolved, the enduring bond of friendship continues to tie Viet Nam and Romania closely together. As Prime Minister of Viet Nam recalled during his visit to Romania, citing a well-known Romanian proverb: ‘Anii trec, prietenii rămân mereu alături’ - years may pass, but true friends always remain by each other’s side. This spirit captures the essence of our relations and the path we wish to carry forward.

 2. What are the potentials and prospects for the development of bilateral relations?

The prospects for Viet Nam-Romania relations are very promising. Our two countries still have many untapped potentials for cooperation, especially in the context of the profound transformations both nations are undertaking today, as we strive toward development goals that serve the well-being of our peoples.

The official visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Romania in January 2024, together with the recent visit of H.E. Nguyen Khac Dinh, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Viet Nam, to Romania, were important highlights in the bilateral relations recently. These visits not only reaffirmed the political trust and the strong foundation of our friendship, but also offered valuable opportunities for both sides to discuss future cooperation with very concrete proposals. Vice Chairman Nguyen Khac Dinh’s meetings with leaders of the Romanian Parliament and the Romania-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group reflected the strong political will of both sides to deepen collaboration.

Among his specific proposals were the establishment of joint agricultural ventures, drawing on Romania’s fertile land and Viet Nam’s experience, skilled workforce, and farming techniques; as well as the early opening of direct flights between our two countries to facilitate travel, trade, investment, and tourism.

The two sides also agreed on many other practical areas of cooperation, including digital transformation, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and trade promotion. All these efforts are aligned with our shared goal of reaching 1 billion USD in bilateral trade turnover in the near future, by 2030.

Besides, Romania welcomed Viet Nam’s recent visa exemption policy for Romanian citizens until 2028, which is expected to significantly boost exchanges in business, culture, and tourism. Looking ahead, we anticipate more high-level visits in the near future, which will undoubtedly help to elevate our partnership to new heights.

The upcoming Vietnam Business Forum in Europe, to be held in Bucharest in October 2025, will serve as another concrete step to strengthen economic ties and open up new opportunities for trade and investment.

3. The world is seeing that Viet Nam is preparing for a “new era.” Could you share more information with our readers?

The birth of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam in 1945, now the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, opened a new era for our nation - the era of independence and freedom. This was followed by the era of Đổi mới and national development. After 80 years of growth, Viet Nam is once again ready to ‘transform itself,’ entering what we call the third era - the Era of Rising of the Vietnamese Nation.

This is a natural development, reflecting the reality that Viet Nam’s position and strength have been continuously elevated.

Today, Viet Nam ranks 32nd in the world by economic size, is among the top 20 trading nations, and one of the 10 fastest-growing economies globally. It has become an active contributor to international peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.

In 2024, Viet Nam achieved a GDP growth rate of 7.09% (476.3 billion USD), with the target for 2025 set at over 8%, laying the foundation for double-digit growth in the coming years. Over the past year, the country has resolutely carried out a major restructuring of its governance system, reducing the number of ministries from 18 to 13, provinces and cities from 63 to 34, eliminating the district level, and cutting down 70% of commune-level administrative units.

These bold reforms demonstrate our readiness to embrace this new era, with the ultimate goal of making Viet Nam a developed, high-income country by 2045 - on the centenary of the founding of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. To achieve this vision, we are prioritizing innovation, digital transformation, green growth, and international integration. For our friends and partners like Romania, this new era represents enormous opportunities to cooperate with Viet Nam in areas of shared interest, thereby contributing to peace, prosperity, and sustainable development. On this historic occasion, I am confident that Viet Nam will continue to grow strongly, and I sincerely hope that Romania will remain a close companion on this journey - deepening our traditional friendship, enhancing mutual trust and understanding, and elevating our bilateral relations to new heights./.
