ASEAN ‘Centrality’ and China-Japan-South Korea Trilateral Co-operation

Southeast Asia is far ahead of Northeast Asia when it comes to regional integration. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has become something of a model for co-operation and an important convenor of discussions that include its external partners.

Three of those partners — China, Japan and South Korea — have again started talking after a long hiatus, which is welcome news in ASEAN, writes Dewi Fortuna Anwar. Anything that eases tensions in light of the China-US rivalry is a useful step toward greater harmony.
