On August 20, 2021,the Romanian Institute for Europe-Asia Studies (IRSEA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with theCenter for Global and Strategic Studies (CGSS), in the presence of the senior management of the two institutions and H.E. Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Romania.
On behalf of IRSEA, Ambassador (p) Gheorghe Savuica, President and Founder of the Institution, stated during the MoU Signing Ceremony that the auspicious moment marks the beginning of a fruitful cooperation between Romania’s oldest think-tank focused on Europe-Asia relations and one of Pakistan’s most prominent and active think-tanks. IRSEA’s President manifested his desire that the agreed partnership will mark a superior, in-depth knowledge on Asia in Europe, particularly Pakistan’s role as an increasingly significant regional actor in Asia, as well as raise awareness on Europe’s significance in Asia. Ambassador Savuica was fond to recall his great memories of Pakistan, where he resided as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania. At the same time, he congratulated the leaders of CGSS for their prolific activity and quality research and expressed his gratitude to H.E. Ambassador Dr. Zafar Iqbal for his outstanding, professional and friendly dedication in further strengthening the excellent relations so happily existing between Romania and Pakistan.
On behalf of Center for Global & Strategic Studies (CGSS), Lt. Col. Khalid Taimur Akram (retd), Executive Director of the Institution, stated that this partnership between the two institutions will result in bringing these two nations closer. Hence, resulting in enhanced people-to-people contact. Furthermore, he mentioned that the Memorandum of Understanding is not just a piece of paper. It commits both institutions to closer cooperation in common areas of interest which include academic collaborations, joint research projects, etc. Additionally, he stated that CGSS looks forward to being able to utilize the knowledge and expertise of The Romanian Institute for Europe-Asia Studies (IRSEA) in education, research, etc. Lt. Col Khalid also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Ambassador of Pakistan to Romania for his sincere efforts in facilitating the development of academic connectivity between the two countries through the MOU Signing between these two institutions.
On this occasion, Ambassador of Pakistan to Romania, Dr. Zafar Iqbal, extended his felicitation to both the IRSEA Romania and the CGSS Pakistan on signing the MoU on collaboration. He expressed that cooperation and exchanges between the academics, researchers and think tanks of both sides will help promote better understanding of bilateral and regional issues and will deepen the engagement between Romania and Pakistan. He appreciated Ambassador (p) Gheorghe Savuica’s dynamism that was instrumental in finalization and signing of the MoU between the two sides in an expedited manner and expressed confidence that the intended collaboration activities between the two sides will soon be initiated.
Having signed the agreements during a virtual Ceremony, given the current pandemic-related restrictions, the representatives of the two institutions further discussed practical means of cooperation, such as co-organising a workshop on the bilateral relations between the two countries, participating at a CPEC-themed conference in Islamabad, as well as further research opportunities at the Punjab University, the oldest public university in Pakistan.
As Romania’s first independent, autonomous, not-for-profit Romanian think-tank, IRSEA is focused on raising awareness on Europe-Asia relations and Area Studies.
