Many East Asia foreign policy experts are expecting that the re-election of Donald Trump as president of the United States will usher in significant change. With his characteristically overheated rhetoric, Trump promised on the campaign trail to impose trade-disturbing tariffs and extortionate payments from allies such as Japan and South Korea for hosting US forces. On the other hand, some liberal-leaning South Korean experts find Trump to be a potential, if unlikely, ally, as they think back to his outreach to Kim Jong Un and North Korea in his first presidency.
