The Philippines’ Engagement with the European Union: Security and Economic Development

During Duterte’s turbulent administration, the Philippines pivoted to China in the hope of boosting its economic growth and its security situation. However, the successor administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr seems to have returned to a more traditional alignment with the United States. Manila, however, fears that US support for the economic development of the Philippines is inadequate.

This has prompted the Philippines to broaden its partnerships with other states. While enjoying burgeoning relationships with U.S. allies in the region such as Japan, Australia and South Korea, Manila has deepened cooperation with certain European states and the European Union itself.
