ASEAN-EU ties have evolved from the EU becoming ASEAN's Dialogue Partner in 1977 to a Strategic Partnership in 2020, reflecting the EU's strategic importance to the region. Regional respondents in the ISEAS’ State of Southeast Asia Survey have often cited the EU as a trusted strategic partner that upholds international law and serves as a valuable third-party hedge amid US-China geopolitical tensions. Despite high reputational regard for the EU as well as its strength in normative leadership, challenges remain in effectively translating this goodwill into more tangible outcomes. Differences in standards and broad-based policy coherence, coupled with recurring tensions over human rights and trade policy issues, remain key sticking points to facilitating greater bloc-to-bloc cooperation. Yet, there is a lot to mutually gain from strengthening this relationship on both an overall strategic level and sectoral cooperation in areas such as supply chain resilience and energy transition, amongst others. This webinar will explore what it will take to deepen ASEAN-EU partnership for more practical and mutually beneficial wins that could potentially create a more formidable economic force amid the uncertain geoeconomic landscape.
